Our Story

Our Story:
The Heritage of Bethel

We have a tremendous legacy! Bethel's roots can be traced to a retired grocer by the name of Lewis Gilbert Jones, who, along with his wife, Sarah, moved to New Mexico in 1881 from Missouri with their four children. They established a grocery business and a meat market in the Los Cerrillos area.
Feeling the need to share their Christian experience with other people they opened their home in 1911 to do missionary work among their friends and neighbors. Cottage meetings were held and soon 50 to 60 people were meeting regularly.
In 1926, Reverend Samuel McClain and his wife, Bessie, arrived in Albuquerque, were chosen to be Bethel 's first pastors and we now claim November, 1926, as the birthday of the church.
Since that eventful day in November, 1926, Bethel has been housed in a tent and four different buildings. Our current facility was completed in January, 1989, with the men of the church, directed by Norman McFall, doing the majority of the work.
Bethel has been served by thirteen different pastoral families, and Pastors Michael and Shirley Mullins, along with their four children, have served the church since March of 1989.
In its many years of existence, thousands of individuals have come to know God at Bethel . The foundation built by the pioneers and forefathers of our faith has served us well. We are justly proud of our great heritage (thus the name Bethel Heritage Church).
But today, like those who have gone before us, we commit ourselves to the service of God, remembering it all started with a simple prayer meeting.
